The Chinese Garden Court at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Narrated by Maxwell Hearn, curator, Department of Asian Art

Recorded in 2003

Curator Maxwell Hearn describes the significance of the architectural and landscape design elements in the Chinese Garden Court at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Known as The Astor Court, this architectural treasure is a reconstruction of an authentic Ming dynasty garden courtyard in the city of Suzhou, west of Shanghai. It opened to the public in 1981 as a gift of the Vincent Astor Foundation, and includes an adjoining room that houses the Museum’s collection of Chinese hardwood furniture.
